Interessi principali

My main interests focus on Comparative Anatomy (BIO/06 –05/B2) and Zoology (BIO/05-05/B1) carried out on (mainly) invertebrates and vertebrates, by applying multi-level approaches.

I explore issues concerning form in animal biology, in the dual structural and evolutive prospective, including all possible implementation aspects in the study of modifications determinated by alteration of environmental health.

From an evolutionary viewpoint all relationships between phylogeny and morphogenesis are analyzed, to highlight interconnection between structure, function and adaptation, through a comparative approach as well.

Particularly my studies are carried out by using theoretic and experimental methods, applied both in fieldwork and museum research activities, to investigate on the structure functional organization and morphogenesis in relation to age (ontogenetic allometry) ecology, behaviour, intra- and interspecific relationships, and animal phylogeny (mainly evolutive allometry).

Specifically, I integrated morpho-functional data with genetic, molecular, biochemical and histological aspects on autochthonous taxa (endemic and non), inclusive their evolutive and conservationist implications, particularly on species of evolutive, biogeographic, ecological, and economic issue of concern.

Aims are also on the asymmetry origin and meanings, and their evolutive modifications (that is deviation from perfect symmetry): fluctuating asymmetry, directional asymmetry, and antisymmetry. These tools are fundamental to ameliorate biological aspects concerning the adaptive degree overall when innovative methods (such as 2D and 3D bio-imaging and post-processing techniques, and appropriate associated statistics) are executed.
